Remake Is No Masterpiece,
but Succeeds with Good Pacing and Shocks Galore

Horror film is enduring a period of what some would call “rejuvenation” and others would dub “total lack of imagination.” Good new horror is hard to find and recent remakes have been totally hit-or-miss. This weekend’s The Crazies is based on a 1973 George Romero film of the same name. This version, directed by Breck Eisner, shares basic plot points and characters, but it outdoes the mediocre-to-awful original by far. The premise is simple: small town America turned upside down by a force that pits neighbor against neighbor in a gruesome battle for their lives. The Crazies isn’t a masterpiece, but its pacing and effects ensure a good time for those in search of an old-school, seventies-style scare flick.

It is spring in idyllic Ogden Marsh, Iowa: baseball season is opening, the fields are ripe for planting, and the sound of tractors fills the air. Young love blossoms amidst the gently rustling grass, and the townsfolk go about their daily lives. The inherent strangeness of rural America is common in horror cinema, partly because it’s familiar to so many Americans and partly because there’s something eerie about such tranquility. Sheriff David Dutten (Timothy Olyphant) suddenly finds himself in a tough situation when the people of Ogden Marsh begin to go completely out of their minds. The film follows a pretty standard formula: Dutten, his wife Judy (Radha Mitchell), and Deputy Russell Clank (Joe Anderson) manage to survive the initial outbreak and have to fight their way through the hordes of crazies to save themselves. While it bears a lot of resemblance to older horror (obviously), its production values are fantastic and the pacing is ideal. Between atrocious kills there are minor chuckles. Psychologically it works wonders—the moment everyone in the theater breathes a sigh of relief, another shocker hits them.

As it turns out, the government accidentally released a biological weapon into the water supply of Ogden Marsh, causing sentient humans to go totally insane. The movie bears a resemblance to zombie films because the agent causes deterioration and spooky physical changes, but these are not zombies—they’re far scarier than the walking (or running) dead. The crazies just want to kill, kill, kill, but because the infected retain knowledge of weaponry and everyday functions, they’re a scarier threat than zombies, whose only concern is to consume. Hunting is a hefty pastime in Ogden Marsh, and when the virus infiltrates the brains of those with the shotguns, they train their sights on more familiar fodder—a terrifying but obvious twist. The Crazies plays with the idea that a person’s very universe can be turned upside down in a matter of moments, which is, on a base level, what makes horror so fascinating and entertaining.

Good horror film and literature can transform everyday objects, situations, and people into something completely off-the-wall and appalling. To a farmer, tillers, tractors, and pitchforks are simply equipment used to ensure a good crop. To an outsider, these things shriek “instrument of torture.” The Crazies features farm tools used in the latter way, which is effective considering its setting (though not new). The movie also strums on the nerves of claustrophobics and those of us who, as kids, loved the old car washes in which huge rubber tentacles slap against the windows. There are a number of really creative, smart kills that aren’t implausible, but neither are they routine. In particular, a thresher featured early in the movie doesn’t live up to its myriad possibilities, but it’s better for filmmakers to refrain from taking the easy out. It’s difficult for a movie to make a horror fan think, “Whoa!” but The Crazies succeeds at that.

The movie could easily have taken an enthusiastic anti-war or anti-government stance, but chooses to sympathize with the soldiers who appear to exterminate the infected (and anyone who gets in their way). The few military men that survivors encounter make it perfectly clear that they were only trying to help, that they were only following orders. (Though it is worth noting that throughout human history, “I was only following orders” has popped up when the worst atrocities are committed.) There is no real enemy here, and that’s terrifying. Throughout the film, satellite imagery appears, backing away in spurts from the action on the ground. Red letters pop up on the screen: Begin Quarantine Sequence. The audience is privy to the terrifying minutiae of a small town’s destruction, but someone else is watching from above, plotting the best way to save the rest of the world from contamination. It’s a creepy and thoroughly neat way to remind the audience that they’re not the only voyeurs.

The Crazies suffers from a merely adequate script, and a few sentimental scenes that have no place and feel utterly dumb. Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell are good in their respective roles, and Joe Anderson’s (Across the Universe) cheekbones and baby blues go a long way. Danielle Panabaker (Sky High) does well in a rather disposable role, adding pretty youthfulness to a cast of largely older actors. The movie’s merit lies in its smart editing, great makeup effects, and classic feel. Character development isn’t at the forefront, but that’s just as well. For a film like this, it’s important just to be effectively creepy and shocking, and at that it succeeds admirably.

Download Shutter Island Free

With only one Oscar win under his belt for direction, Martin Scorsese has sure been on fire over the last decade with Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and his win for The Departed. There seems to be just no slowing the man down. After having just received his Cecil B. DeMille Award at this year’s Golden Globes, his latest turn behind the camera, Shutter Island, is nothing short of a masterpiece. What’s one thing his last four films all have in common? One name – Leonardo DiCaprio.

Their latest collaboration, Shutter Island, comes from a critically-praised novel from Dennis Lehane. While the author is not known for heartfelt-love-conquers-all storylines, they are rooted in a reality that’s gritty and much more palatable when you want things a little more realistic in your movies. From the man who brought us heartbreak and suspense from the streets of Boston comes the same recipe for success, but just off the shores of his native land.

Having read and loved all of Lehane’s Patrick Kenzie/Angela Gennaro novels, I made it a point to be sure to read his Shutter Island as soon as the film was greenlit. After having read the novel, it was clear that one thing must be sure of to guarantee the film a success: it must remain as true to the source as possible or it just won’t work. Thankfully, Scorsese and screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis appear to be huge fans of their source material and have given a masterful interpretation in bringing Shutter Island to the big screen.

Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) is just offshore on a ferry bound for Ashecliffe Hospital, an institution for the criminally insane, which sits atop the rock known as Shutter Island. It’s 1954 and Teddy is on his way along with his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) to investigate the disappearance of patient Rachel Solando. Everyone seems in a rush to find their missing patient who appears to have simply vanished. The two most hurried to find Rachel is Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) and Dr. Naehring (Max von Sydow).

A storm is approaching the island and with the risk of a hurricane in their midst everyone must either solve the case or find Rachel before it’s too late. Through the proceedings, Teddy’s past is peeled away, layer by layer. We learn Teddy’s really come to the island to find the man (Laeddis, played by Elias Koteas) responsible for killing his wife Dolores (Michelle Williams) in an apartment fire whom Teddy believes is being held in Ward C, where the most dangerous patients are locked away. Teddy also has plans to blow the lid on patient experimentation akin to what the Nazi’s used during WWII.

When Dr. Cawley announces that they’ve found Rachel (Emily Mortimer), Teddy interrogates her and is not convinced that this is the real Rachel. After the storm blows out the island’s power and the staff have to contain the patients Teddy and Chuck use the disorientation of the moment to have their own run of the island and this is when Teddy discovers the real Rachel (Patricia Clarkson) who lets Teddy in on some island secrets and he begins to question the motives of not just the local staff but of his new partner and himself as well.

Scorsese is working overtime in Cape Fear mode here, and some would say he may even be working at his most unrestrained. But what he’s managed to pull off here is a grand bait-and-switch of menacingly operatic proportions. DiCaprio and Williams turn in tour-de-forces while Scorsese surrounds them with spectacularly surreal and all the more frightening dream sequences seamlessly blending a gradually booming foghorn score with perfectly rendered special effects to pull off some of the most intense sequences in quite some time.

What ultimately pulls the film together is it’s true sense of ebb and flow. Everything happens for a reason and when and what Scorsese reveals along the way is all for the sake of making sure everything makes sense. Great crescendos lead the way and just when you think things are headed for their worst there’s a pause to leave you hanging before the scene hurtles into its climax. After Shutter Island you could truly call Scorsese a maestro as he pulls his strings to watch you squirm.

Download New Moon Movie Free

Cast: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner

Direction: Chris Weitz

There's way too much tortured acting going on in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, even for those like me who enjoyed the earlier film.

Picking up where Twilight left off, this film follows moody teenager Bella Swan as she's dumped by her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen for fear of hurting her. She spends months on end moping in her bedroom, before another boy falls in love with her. But Bella isn't destined to have a normal relationship. Turns out her new guy, the hunky Jacob Black is a werewolf.

What bogs down this second film that's been adapted from Stephenie Meyer's bestselling novels, is the morose nature of Bella and Edward's romance. Robert Pattinson, who became an overnight heartthrob since appearing in Twilight, plays Edward Cullen as a brooding, humorless fellow with almost no personality at all. Doesn't help that Kristen Stewart's Bella is a bland and passive character who remains sullen and self-absorbed throughout the film, pleading Edward to "change her" and then going into some sort of blue funk each time he turns her down.

THUMBS DOWN: A painfully long melodrama with affected performances from each of its 3 leads.

While the first film and its director Catherine Hardwicke successfully managed to capture the virginal yearning in Bella, New Moon directed by Chris Weitz, only gets the action portions right. The scene in which Jacob (played by Taylor Lautner) first morphs into a CGI werewolf and leaps onto another of his species is nothing short of stunning, and the same can be said for a musical sequence in which a pack of werewolves chase a female vampire through a thick forest.

But these are small consolations in what is otherwise a painfully long, uniformly boring melodrama with affected performances from each of its three leads.

It's an ordeal to endure mostly for its maudlin, morose tone. I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for The Twilight Saga: New Moon; it made a ton of money when it was released internationally, but that doesn't make it any good. Watch it entirely at your own risk.

Touch phone: Technical data of the HTC Trophy

Recently, a picture of the HTC Trophy was leaked. The picture was also accompanied by a list of technical aspects of this mobile device. They were published on HTCPedia.com, a website for HTC users with news and information about the company HTC, including its smartphones and accessories.

Touch-phone

The features of the HTC Trophy include:

* A wide 3-inch capacitive touch screen
* A Qualcomm MSM7227 600MHz processor
* It has 512MB of ROM and 256MB of RAM
* TouchFLO 3D
* It is a very thin device: Only 11mm thickness
* It has a built-in 5-megapixel camera (which is perfect for those who like to take those unexpected pictures at any time)
* It comes with a 3.5mm audio jack
* Slot to insert microSD memory cards
* WiFi and 3G connectivity (although there is no clear indication about what type of 3G will be supported)

Of course, the specs are very decent but not quite impressive. At this point, we don’t see a strong reason to spend money by buying this mobile phone, especially if we keep in mind that some smartphones with Snapdragon processors and 3.7-inch touch screens are starting to appear on the market. But maybe some new features will be announced soon.

Anyway, it is interesting to see that this gadget has a really slim design with a thickness of only 11 mm (so it is thinner than the original Motorola RAZR V3, which has a thickness of 14 mm).

At this time, nothing is known about the launch date. And the price is also a mystery.

Samsung cell phone: B5722 Duos is available in India

The Samsung B5722 Duos just was launched in India, after being available in some European countries since last December. In this way, this mobile phone is now the first Samsung phone with touchscreen that supports two SIM cards in India.

Samsung-cell-phone

The B5722 Duos don’t support 3G, but it allows users to use two SIM cards at the same time. Those SIM cards can be alternated all the time if the user wants so, without needing to turn off the phone.

Features of the Samsung B5722 Duos include: A robust 2.8-inch QVGA touch screen, Bluetooth connectivity, music player, FM radio with RDS (Radio Data System), a built-in 3-megapixel camera, and slot to insert microSD memory cards (up to 8GB).

The B5722 Duos also features easy access to popular social network websites (Facebook and MySpace, among others), as well as to Palringo Instant Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ and AIM.

New tablet PC: Notion Ink Adam has been announced advertisement

Hardly three weeks have passed since the iPad was launched, and now some other companies have decided to get down to business in the realm of tablet computers in order to try to win share in this market and compete with the new and interesting Apple gadget. Recently, Dell announced its new Mini 5 (an Android-powered Snapdragon slate), which was unveiled during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. On the other hand, according to some recent reports, Micro-Star International (MSI) will also launch a new tablet.

New-tablet-PC

But, without any doubt, the tablet that could become a real threat for Apple is the one that Notion Ink has just announced (the prototype has been named as Adam), since it would integrate technologies such as Nvidia’s Tegra and ARM. Also it will support Flash and be able to play video up to 1080p. In addition, the new tablet is supposed to have a longer battery life (twice the battery life of the iPad).

It is expected that its launch will take place in the mid-2010 and many people are already speculating about the multiple functions and features that, supposedly, will be better than those of the new Apple tablet.

The Notion Ink Adam will be powered by NVidia’s Tegra chipset (as mentioned before) and will use a Pixel Qi screen with low energy consumption. The fact it will support video playing at 1080p is remarkable if we keep in mind the iPad is limited to 720p. Also, there will be different versions of the Adam with different thickness and that is a good thing because there is people out there who prefer to carry robust gadgets, even if those gadgets are bigger, but also there are other people who are always inclined to buy the thinest and smaller devices.

New in technology – Splinternet: Gadgets will modify the Internet in a radical way (or maybe not)

For many years, the Internet was simple: All of us were browsing the same global system of interconnected computer networks.

But now in 2010, thanks to the iPhone, the Kindle, the BlackBerry, the Droid and, of course, thanks to the excessively valued iPad, the idea of a basic Internet could be only a charming thing of the past.

Right now, the mobile-connected devices are everywhere and, with each day, there are more and more devices. At the same time, we are seeing a proliferation of contents and apps that are destined to be displayed only in certain gadgets. For example, the application Tweetie (for Twitter) is available only for the iPhone; and some Gmail apps only work on Android-based phones. And, if you buy an e-book for the Amazon Kindle, then you won’t be able to read it on the Apple iPad.

On the other hand, many online contents and web applications are protected by passwords, including, of course, Facebook profiles and news from some online newspapers.

New-in-technology

Is this a new age? According to Josh Bernoff (forrester.com), yes, this is a new age: The age of the Splinternet.

However, some people think the contrary is true: According to them, actually, today Internet is more easy to access than ever and more “standard” too. What do you think? Maybe, you want to read an interesting interview with Josh Bernoff… but please, read the comments that are below the interview, too. Maybe they are more interesting than the interview itself. :)

USB external hard drive: USB 3.0 SSD Aviator -2

Approximately one year ago, the first SSD drives were introduced: They constitute a new storage system that leaves some magnetic and mechanical parts behind in order to adopt an innovative, faster, silent and efficient way of storing information; however, this technology is still an expensive option with (relatively) low storage capacities and, for that reason, it has not been adopted massively in the market yet. Anyway, this is a great technology with many advantages. For example, the installation of the external SSD drives is a really easy process and they can be connected to any PC or laptop in seconds.

USB-external-hard-drive

A new enhanced product in this category is Aviator-2. It is an external SSD drive with a faster transfer speed and an improved performance, thanks to its USB 3.0 port. In fact, a new major feature of the USB 3.0 specification is the SuperSpeed bus that can provide a transfer mode at 4.8 Gbit/s.

USB-3-Active-2-SSD-external-drive

The maker Active Media Products has introduced the first product of this new generation: An external SSD drive that, initially, will be available in 64GB and 128GB versions. Besides, this drive is supposed to support transfer rates of up to 4Gbits/sec (10 times faster than the USB 2.0 specification).

Also, this external SSD drive comes in sizes that are smaller than usual sizes. Specifically, the dimensions are 5.3 x 3.3 x 0.6 inches (135 x 84 x 15 mm); actually, it could be carried in a pocket of a regular jacket. The price of the Aviator-2 is about US$ 260 (190 EUR) for the 64GB version and US$ 453 (333 EUR) for the other version with a storage capacity of up to 128GB.

Flash card memory: 144-petabyte CompactFlash advertisement

The membership organization CompactFlash Association, which is in charge of managing the standardized enclosure of the CompactFlash (CF) mass storage devices, has made public an update with the 5.0 specification for this type of products with a clear improvement: A greater storage capacity that now could reach (in theory) up to 144 petabytes. Although it will be very complicated we see CF cards with this capacity, the new range of 48-bit addresses will allow to overcome the limitations of the previous specifications.

Shigeto Kanda, Canon representative and CFA chairman of the board (by the way, the CompactFlash Association website is a really really basic and old-fashioned site), pointed out that “the higher capacity and higher performance of CF cards enabled by the 48-bit addressing feature in the CF5.0 specification will further increase the value of DSLR cameras. The Video Performance Guarantee feature of the CF5.0 specification will help CF cards to expand into new markets such as high-speed movie equipment like professional video camcorders.”

Flash-card-memory

As was pointed out in the official announcement, the new benefits of the 5.0 specification are mainly supported by the new range of 48-bit addresses, which allows to overcome the previous limitation that established a maximal storage capacity of 137 Gbytes for a CompactFlash card. Again, it will be very complicated the production of 144-petabyte cards in the short term, but of course, the new feature adds a margin of evolution to the industry.

Besides the theoretical increase of the capacity, additional improvements for the ATA standard have been added, as well as a better execution control and the so-called “Video Performance Guarantee Profiles” (recording guarantees for storing video), which is a field where CompactFlash cards had lost ground (at least temporally) with other formats such as SDHC that is currently more popular among the DSLR (Digital-SLR) and digital video camera makers.

Microsoft Office 2010 BetaAfter launching of Windows 7, now Microsoft is unleashing another beta product for testing i.e. Microsoft Office 2010. The Office 2010 beta will feature everything minus the online version, which is currently being tested within Microsoft.

Somewhat surprising for a public beta, the Office 2010 beta offers everything in the office suite so it has Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook and all those other programs most people don’t know how to use like OneNote, Access and Publisher. Office 2010 apps still feature the “ribbon” UI found in Office 2007, but it has been changed somewhat. In terms of entirely new features, Outlook will be able to be linked to social networking sites. Wow! That’s awesome feature. First offered is Windows Live (obviously) and LinkedIn will be added sometime early next year. There is also the aforementioned online version, which will be paired with the new SkyDrive feature to give users 25 GB to store and sync their office documents.

Office 2010 is said to have improved interaction with Windows 7 and its taskbar, which makes sense. That doesn’t mean other users can’t download the beta, it’s free for anyone using Windows XP SP3 and later. With the forthcoming Starter edition which is said to be free for new computers, maybe Microsoft will be able to increase usage of the newest version of Office. Outside of a work environment, or after buying a new PC, users seem to not upgrade their office suite very often. For example, the .docx file format still hasn’t really achieved full support from users, with some just ending up confused.
A DATA USB 3 SATA II flash driveBut obvious 2010 will be a year of gadgets and we start with fast USB 3.0 storage. Set to hit shelves sometime in January, A-DATA's N002 Combo Flash Drive sports both SATA II and a USB 3.0 connection. Using the latter, the drive boasts up to 200MB/sec read and 170 MB/sec write speeds. Or if you're feeling retro, you can take advantage of that backwards-compatibility and connect via USB 2.0.

World's Fastest Supercomputer - IBM

World's Fastest Supercomputer SnapshotWhat may become the world's fastest supercomputer? IBM Envisioning a new chip next year that will go into a University of Illinois in a seek to build supercomputer.

The notorious HAL 9000 sentient supercomputer in "2001: A Space Odyssey" was built in Urbana, Illinois, presumably on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. It is being housed in a special building on the Urbana-Champaign campus specifically for the computer that will theoretically be capable of achieving 10 petaflops, about 10 times as fast as the fastest supercomputer today.

Though not aspiring to artificial intelligence, the IBM Blue Waters project supercomputer, like the HAL 9000 series, will be able to do massively complex calculations in an instant and, like HAL, be built in Urbana-Champaign. (A petaflop is 1 quadrillion floating point operations per second, a key indicator of supercomputer performance.)

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois, it will be the largest publicly accessible supercomputer in the world when it's turned on sometime in 2011.

Supercomputers are essentially a large collection of microprocessors acting in concert on a complex problem. As processor designs go, the upcoming Blue Waters' IBM Power7 processor--due in the first half of 2010--is a big step for IBM, combining the best of IBM's two separate chips used in its "Roadrunner" supercomputer, which has often been ranked as the fastest supercomputer in the world. Power7 fuses the flagship Power chip design with key technology from a separate "Cell" processor that was part of IBM's Roadrunner system at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, according to Bradley McCredie, an IBM Fellow in the Systems and Technology Group.

It integrates eight processing cores in one chip package and each core can execute four tasks--called "threads"--turning an individual chip into a virtual 32-core processor. As a yardstick, Intel's high-end Xeon processors typically have two threads per processing core.

IBM is also using novel memory technology. Widely used "static" RAM memory, used as the on-chip memory in almost all processors today, can add as much as a billion transistors to high-end processors. IBM wanted to avoid these ballooning--and costly--chip counts and elected to use a technology called E-DRAM, keeping the total number of transistors to 1.2 billion. "The equivalent number of transistors if we had done all of the cache in (static RAM) is well in excess of two billion," McCredie said.

And the chip's speed?
Between 3GHz and 4GHz (IBM has yet to make a final decision), which is actually a lower rating than the previous Power6 chip which ran at 5GHz. "We have gotten performance from other spots, such as the dense E-DRAM. We had to back off from the gigahertz in order to get eight of these cores on to the chip and not have it melt," according to McCredie.

IBM has also made other tweaks to get the performance up. It has brought circuitry onto the chip for communicating with system memory--which was previously external to the processor--and returned to "out of order" instructions.

And how does IBM keep this dense collection of ultrafast processors cool? In a word, water. "We actually went a bit further environmentally," said Ed Seminaro, an IBM Fellow who is involved with the University of Illinois project. "We took a lot of the infrastructure that's typically inside of the computer room for cooling and powering and moved the equivalent of that infrastructure right into that same cabinet with the server, storage, and interconnect hardware."

Seminaro continued: "The whole rack is water-cooled. We actually water-cool the processor directly to pull the heat out. We take it right to water, which is very power efficient," he said.

World's fastest supercomputer?
The Blue Waters project is funded by the National Science Foundation and follows a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) project that also uses IBM's Power7 chip, according to Seminaro.

"We did a lot more than what we would have typically done because of this (DARPA) engagement," Seminaro said. "And what followed was the Blue Waters contract. Blue Waters was a bid to the National Science Foundation. We had strong story based on what we did for DARPA," he said.

Blue Waters will be able to theoretically hook together 16,384 Power7 chips--referred to as "nodes"--for a total theoretical performance of 16 petaflops, though IBM said that, at least initially, the theoretical peak performance will likely be closer to 10 petaflops and the much more strict "sustained" performance on real-world software applications (not cited in Top 500 supercomputer statistics) will be one petaflop.

But organizations like DARPA and the NSF are not looking only at Top 500 "peak" benchmarks, which can be achieved rather crudely, according to Seminaro. "You can get a pretty good number without a lot of bandwidth (speed) between nodes," he said, referring to the Top 500 Supercomputer "LINPACK" benchmark. "Because there's almost no communication between nodes that you have to do for this benchmark. And you can get away with very poor memory bandwidth."

In Blue Waters' case, the transfer rate between nodes is a game changer, Seminaro believes. "The transfer of data between any of those two nodes in the system is at the full rate of 192GB per second--peak," he said. "So, you can get data from anyplace to anyplace at that kind of speed with latency on the order of less than one microsecond."

This kind of performance is crucial for big companies and governments alike. "Companies including Boeing, GM, and Ford, use these systems heavily. Most of the crash tests are now done on these machines. And weather prediction--a large percentage is done on this platform," Seminaro said. More specialized government-centric applications include simulations of how to properly dispose of nuclear waste, he added.

Blue Waters is the largest supercomputer project that Seminaro has been involved in since 1999, when he first participated in a supercomputer project. "This is really the biggest," he said.

And watch out Intel, Power7 is coming to commercial server products too. Said Seminaro: "We will be shipping [Power7 processors] sometime in the first half of next year in some of commercial products."

Microsoft Courier

Currently, there are some rumors about two new “tablet” projects: Apple iTablet and Microsoft Courier.

Two new gadgets for 2010: Apple iTablet and Microsoft Courier

As for the Microsoft Courier, apparently, this Tablet PC is in the last stage of development and its features would make it look more like a Booklet than a Tablet PC. Although an official introduction of this device has not been carried out, Microsoft is already studying impressions of some users that have used a Tablet PC, which is a term that refers to computers equipped with a touchscreen (or graphics tablet/screen hybrid) and complex settings, applications and modes.
